Graham Potter has taken over as interim Sweden boss following his sacking by West Ham and it sounds like some of their stars have been left completely underwhelmed.

The Graham Potter era at West Ham was so bad he ended it as the worst permanent manager in the club’s 130-year history.

By modern parameters, the fact Potter ended up as a viral meme online is a better indicator of just how bad his eight-month tenure was in east London.

The Hammers were abysmal under the ex Brighton boss, who ended nearly two years of self-imposed exile following his sacking by Chelsea in order to take the West Ham job.

Somehow Potter took the “mess” he kept telling everyone he inherited from Julen Lopetegui and made things even worse.

Potter won just six of his 25 games in charge of West Ham, giving him a worse win ratio than the hapless Avram Grant.

Had he remained in post there is no doubt Potter would have emulated Grant by taking West Ham down into the Championship.

Some Hammers fans dubbed Potter a ‘PE teacher with a psychology degree’.

His flaws, weaknesses and meekness have already been brutally exposed after just six games under his replacement Nuno Espirito Santo.

With his authoritative aura and presence, tactical nous and no-nonsense style, Nuno is already winning hearts and minds at West Ham – in the dressing room and the stands.

Back-to-back wins against Newcastle and Burnley have breathed new life into West Ham’s campaign, giving them real hope of Premier League survival.

Nuno’s two home wins in seven days matched Potter’s total for his entire eight-month West Ham tenure.

After losing his job as Hammers boss, Potter was always going to find it difficult to get another Premier League job anytime soon.

So when the offer of becoming Sweden’s interim manager emerged, Potter jumped at it.

The ex Hammers boss made his name in Sweden by leading the rise of unfancied Ostersunds.

But he may have his work cut out to convince at the very top of the game with the national team.

Sweden had been looking for a new manager since the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson following their 1-0 loss to Kosovo during the October international break.

That result made automatic qualification from their group impossible.

However, Sweden can still reach the play-offs even without finishing in the top two of Group B as a result of their success in the 2024-25 Nations League, where they topped their group.

The former Hammers manager has no time to waste getting a tune out of a talented group which includes the likes of Aleksandr Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, Anthony Elanga and – when fit – Dejan Kulusevski.

But some Sweden stars sound completely underwhelmed after a first session with West Ham flop Potter.

Potter took his first training session as a manager since being sacked by the Hammers as he oversaw Sweden training.

The press gathered in the mixed zone after the session to get an insight into whether Potter has reinvigorated the grossly under-performing group.

Sky Sports News even sent a camera crew to get a gauge of the mood in the camp ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia.

And it is fair to say the two players they interviewed sounded as enthralled as West Ham fans ended up under Potter.

Usually when a new manager comes in, players talk them up to the press to toe the party line.

But it seems Potter has failed to instantly convince his new players he is the high calibre coach he’s often given credit for based on early reactions.

Two leading Sweden stars seemed completely nonplussed by the fuss and fanfare of the press around Potter.

One of Sweden’s top players, Isak Hien of Atalanta, looked awkward when asked if Potter can turn things around.

“Of course there’s going to be some changes,” Hien said.

“But nothing in particular now that I can tell you is a big, big change (under Potter).

“We are looking at the basics and trying to get everyone involved (buying in) and up to speed with what we’re going to do.”

Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, who plays for Derby County, seemed even less impressed.

He looked almost embarrassed to deliver his answer to the question about the first impressions made by Potter.

“There’s only been sort of an introduction to him and what we want to achieve which is to reach the World Cup,” Zetterstrom said while audibly sighing and looking visibly underwhelmed.

“So, no, I think the tactical bits – and who will play where – that will come later this week.”

It comes after Michail Antonio slammed Potter for ruining West Ham’s culture in a brutal assessment of the Englishman’s time at the club.

And Callum Wilson made a damning Potter admission after Nuno’s West Ham turnaround in a further dig at the situation the over-rated coach left behind at the London Stadium.
