Rangers set to appoint former Manchester United director as chief operating officer

Former Manchester United director of operations Jim Liggett is set to take up a position at Rangers on an interim basis.
The Rangers Review understands Liggett will assume his role as chief operating officer at Ibrox next month. It is believed he will remain in post until the end of the season while the search continues for a permanent candidate to fill the berth.

Liggett spent more than a quarter of a century working with Greater Manchester Police before moving to Old Trafford as head of security in 2017. He became director of operations two years later and left the Premier League giants last month. He was a colleague of Patrick Stewart south of the border and will now be reunited with the Ibrox chief executive officer.
Rangers are also close to appointing a new chief commercial officer. That process is understood to be in the final stages after more than 100 applicants for the position.
Sean Jefferson, another former Red Devils employee, fulfilled that role following the appointment of Stewart as chief executive officer. Jefferson took over from Karim Virani after his tenure as James Bisgrove’s replacement proved to be a short-lived affair.
The Rangers Review revealed this week that Robbie Thelwell, the son of sporting director Kevin Thelwell, was set to be named as head of recruitment. The 26-year-old has been head of technical scouting and loan management at English Championship side Norwich City since July 2024. Recruited from Aston Villa, where he operated as a first-team scout, he also spent four years working for Wolverhampton Wanderers between 2016 and 2020 while studying for a degree in Sports Coaching Practice, coinciding with his father’s time at Molineux as sporting director.
As part of a restructuring of the football department, Everton’s Nathan Fisher will also move to Scotland as the new head scout at Ibrox. Currently head of emerging talent at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, 36-year-old Fisher is well known to sporting director Thelwell and technical director Dan Purdy.
David MacGregor has been promoted to the role of men’s head kit manager. Current head of academy sports science Jamie Ramsden now becomes the new head of performance.
Jaymes Monte will join as data insights lead this month. With experience from Dundee United, Hudl and StatsBomb, Monte will be charged with embedding data and intelligence in football decision making.
