Everton summer signing facing ‘late fitness test’ ahead of potential full debut vs Wolves tonight

Everton return to action this evening as they take on Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

David Moyes’ side will be desperate to bounce back from the Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool on the weekend.

Everton were 3-2 victors against Wolves at the end of last month, so they’ll certainly fancy their chances of progressing to the fourth round.

It’ll be a chance to see some of the new summer signings who haven’t yet started, although one of them is facing a ‘late fitness test’.

Everton star Merlin Rohl injury doubt for Wolves

Merlin Rohl joined Everton from Freiburg on transfer deadline day, with the deal an initial loan with an obligation to buy worth £17m if the Toffees retain their Premier League status this season.

Rohl has been catching the eye in training, and Moyes has really liked the look of the under-21 Germany international.

However, unfortunately, the midfielder is a doubt for tonight’s game after picking up a ‘small hip injury’ before the Merseyside derby.

“He just picked up a small injury in his hip, groin area,” Moyes said. “I don’t think it’s too bad, but it was just enough that it wasn’t going to get him involved here.”

According to Premier Injuries, Rohl will undergo a fitness test before a decision is made on whether he’ll be in the squad at Molineux.

David Moyes has been impressed with Merlin Rohl

Earlier this month, Moyes admitted he had no concerns over Rohl’s ability to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League.

“I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen, I have to say,” the Scotsman explained.

“Look, he’s another young boy coming in from a different league, a different speed, a different intensity, but he’ll be able to handle it. I’ve got no doubt about that.”

After Rohl’s debut against Aston Villa, Moyes said: “If you’re going to ask me to judge them after 20 minutes in a game, it’s really difficult. I am needing longer to see them, but what we have seen of him we like.

“I thought today, he came on, it’s never easy and you’ve got to remember Aston Villa are one of the best teams in the Premier League and have been for the last couple of seasons and our performance was good against a really good side.”
