Major overnight update after ‘here we go’ gone wrong for West Ham signing

West Ham fans are waking up to a major overnight update after Fabrizio Romano’s ‘here we go’ went wrong on a deal for Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa.

Fabrizio Romano is regarded as one of the top football transfer reporters and insiders on the planet.

But West Ham are one of the only clubs who have the capacity to leave Romano with egg on his face.

Romano’s trademark is to utter the immortal words ‘here we go’ about deals which mean they have been sealed.

Yet the Hammers have managed to prove the Italian wrong on several occasions, most notably defender Fabricio Bruno last year and goalkeeper John Victor this summer.

He rarely gets things wrong but Romano has even admitted he is hesitant to confirm West Ham deals until he sees the player in question holding up the shirt.

That in itself is quite a damning indictment on the chaotic and haphazard way West Ham conduct their recruitment.

Unfortunately for the Hammers they proved why Romano feels that way once again last night.

    MORE WEST HAM STORIES

West Ham’s horrendous start to the new season has seen Graham Potter’s side lose all three games, conceding 11 goals in the process.

The Irons have officially made the worst start to the season of all 92 English Football League clubs – alongside Sheffield United.

So it is little wonder the West Ham board have been frightened into action on the transfer front with just five days to go until the window closes.

And there was a breakthrough with one of them, much to the relief of everyone connected with the club.

Potter looked set to have at least one new signing available for the crucial clash at Nottingham Forest.

France Under 21 defensive midfielder Soungoutou Magassa flew to London for a medical on Wednesday ahead of penning a six-year contract in a £17.3m move from Monaco.

Romano gave West Ham’s Magassa deal his trademark ‘here we go’ after the player, who can also play centre-back, performed a stunning U-turn on joining Forest.

Things went very pear-shaped in very typical West Ham style, though.

Big update after ‘here we go’ gone wrong for West Ham signing

There has been a major overnight update after ‘here we go’ gone wrong for West Ham signing Magassa.

Sun journalist Jack Rosser claimed on Wednesday that West Ham would likely announce Magassa in the evening.

But in a devastating twist, Foot Mercato – who broke the news about Magassa in the first place – revealed there was a problem with his Hammers medical.

As a result, West Ham’s old Europa League foes Eintracht Frankfurt launched a hijack of the move.

And Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna revealed Magassa was now ‘very tempted to join Frankfurt’ instead.

‘Only West Ham’ came the collective cry from a fanbase so fed up that anger and fury is quickly turning to complete apathy and gallows humour just three games into a new season.

Thankfully this latest tale of transfer woe has a happy ending for West Ham, though.

Because German journalist Christopher Michel of Absolut Fussball delivered an update which will be music to West Ham’s ears in yet another transfer saga.

Michel, who is the Eintracht Frankfurt reporter for the outlet, has revealed that Magassa will be signing for West Ham United.

“According to my information, he is clear with West Ham United and will therefore almost certainly NOT end up at Eintracht Frankfurt,” Michel said.

That is the best news for some time in an underwhelming West Ham window.

It should also mean Magassa is unveiled on Thursday by the Hammers with claims the medical issue was a technicality which meant it had to be started from the beginning.

Should the French star officially sign for the Hammers on Thursday, it means the club will be able to register him before Friday’s lunchtime cut-off ahead of the crucial trip to Forest.

And Romano will be just as relieved as West Ham.
