Lakers blockbuster trade proposal swaps Austin Reaves for $41 million Rookie of the Year

    The Sporting News

The Los Angeles Lakers have done everything but complete a trade this summer, but Sports Illustrated’s Mark Morales-Smith believes that could quickly change.

In Morales-Smith’s latest blockbuster trade proposal, the Lakers would cut ties with Austin Reaves in favor of the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year.

“The Lakers get a talented young player in (Devin) Vassell, and also upgrade their role players, adding (Stephon) Castle and (Jeremy) Sochan,” Morales-Smith wrote Thursday.

“The first round pick could also be utilized as a trade piece in the future. This team simply isn’t good enough as currently constructed, and they need to make some moves.”

“LeBron James has a year or two left in his career, and this franchise knows they can’t just waste them. They also need to show Luka Doncic why he should want to stay in Los Angeles.”

Morales-Smith’s full trade proposal sends Reaves, Gabe Vincent, Maki Kleber, Jarred Vanderbilt, and a second-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs for Castle, Vassell, Sochan, and a first-round pick.

Castle has been as good as advertised thus far. The UConn product was known for being a disruptive defender and an under-control playmaker who always played off two feet at the collegiate level.

Fortunately for the Spurs, those skills have translated well to the NBA, as Castle averaged 14.7 points and 4.1 assists per game as a first-year contributor, earning him Rookie of the Year honors.

While the former NCAA champion’s 28.5% long-range shooting percentage must improve for him to reach his full potential, he’s well on his way to becoming a star in the big leagues.

Reaves was a breakout star for the Lakers last season, averaging 20.2 points per game on 46.0% field goal shooting and 37.7% three-point shooting.

However, the Oklahoma product didn’t deliver when Los Angeles needed him most (the postseason), which may leave the door open for a potential guard swap this summer.
