Warriors officially lose three-time NBA champion center in free agency after blockbuster trade
The Golden State Warriors’ frontcourt is in trouble after Monday’s heartbreaking news.
The Warriors’ three-time NBA center and fan favorite contributor officially departed from the Bay on Monday after the franchise’s blockbuster seven-team trade.
“The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that the team has signed free agent forward/center Kevon Looney,” the Pelicans stated. “Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.”
Joe Dumars, New Orleans’ Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, expressed his thoughts on landing the former Warriors big man.
“Kevon Looney is an elite professional with a proven championship pedigree,” Dumars said. “He is a warrior in the trenches and brings an incredible work ethic along with invaluable experience, toughness, and selfless leadership to our locker room.”
“His commitment to doing the little things that win games embodies our team values, and we’re excited to welcome him to New Orleans.”
The Dubs selected Looney with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2015 draft.
Looney proved to be the relentless, high-motor low-post asset the Warriors needed, as the franchise hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy three times during the UCLA product’s 10-year stint.
Looney averaged 5.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game with Golden State from 2015 to 2025, shooting 57.5% from the field in 599 contests.
With the Dubs failing to re-sign Looney this summer, the organization must succeed in replacing the 29-year-old veteran with valuable Boston Celtics center Al Horford to keep their frontcourt afloat.
