A glaring need for the Lakers is the addition of a rim-protecting center who can serve as a lob threat and provide physicality in the paint. The team’s recent playoff performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves revealed the absence of such a presence, prompting the Lakers’ front office to prioritize this position in their offseason plans.

One name that has emerged as a potential fit for the Lakers is the Houston Rockets center Steven Adams. Known for his elite offensive rebounding and physical style of play, Adams projects as a natural candidate to fill the Lakers’ void in the frontcourt.

However, the Lakers’ potential pursuit of Adams has encountered a significant hurdle. According to a new report, the Rockets have identified Adams as their top priority among their impending free agents, and are operating with the belief he can be extended.

According to Kelly Iko of the Athletic, “Veterans Steven Adams, Jeff Green and Jae’Sean Tate will be unrestricted free agents as of June 30 — but of the trio, Adams is seen as the clear priority… Adams, who earned $12.6 million last season, would be a natural fit for teams such as San Antonio, New York, Indiana and both Los Angeles organizations. But the Rockets are operating under the assumption Adams wants to return — and will continue to speak with his representation about a possible extension”

Assuming the Lakers truly do covet Adams, this latest report is bad news for them. Adams finished the 2024-25 season, averaging 3.9 points and 5.7 rebounds, while playing backup to starting center Alperen Sengun. His veteran presence played a key role in helping a young Rockets squad clinch the second seed in the Western Conference.

With Adams potentially off the market, the Lakers will focus on exploring alternative avenues to address their need for a big man. The team’s front office is expected to evaluate all possibilities to ensure they secure a player who can contribute immediately and enhance their championship aspirations.
