Huskers survive elimination in Big Ten Tournament with win over Purdue

The Nebraska baseball team faced elimination in the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday night following a devasting 15-2 loss to Ohio State the previous evening. The Huskers clashed with Purdue, a fellow team facing the threat of being sent home in the tournament. Nebraska survived the night, defeating the Boilermakers 6-2 to move on.

The Huskers bounced back big in both hitting and pitching, finishing the game with 12 hits while allowing just two. Though Purdue struck first with a solo home run in the opening inning, Nebraska scored five combined runs in the first third of the game, allowing it to take and hold on to its lead.

The Huskers finished with six batters earning an RBI as well. Cole Evans started Nebraska’s second-inning surge with an RBI double. Riley Silva followed, pitching in an RBI off a fielder’s choice. Joshua Overbeek then delivered an RBI double.

Case Sanderson wrapped up the inning with an RBI single, giving Nebraska a 4-1 lead. Sanderson also led the team in hits on the night, finishing with three. Gabe Swansen and Josh Caron put the game away for the Huskers, bringing the final two runs with home runs.

Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Brett Sears took the mound for Nebraska in the win, throwing through 6.0 innings and facing down 24 batters. Sears finished the night with his ninth win of the season, striking out nine batters and surrendering two hits and two runs. Drew Christo relieved Sears for the final three innings. He threw four strikeouts and allowed no hits nor runs across 10 batters.

Nebraska will await the loser of Ohio State v. Indiana, which will be decided Thursday night. The Huskers’ next game is set for Friday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be viewed on Big Ten Network.
