Anthony Edwards Earns New Nickname After Eliminating LeBron James, Lakers
Aside from a brief 60-second period in the third quarter, the controlled the Los Angels Lakers for most of Wednesday’s Game 5 at Crypto.com Arena.
The Timberwolves got a spirited 27-point, 24-rebound effort from and 23 points out of Julius Randle to hand the Lakers a 103-96 defeat and end their season with a 4-1 series victory.
The only game Minnesota lost in the series was a 94-85 defeat in Game 2 in Los Angeles.
While the Lakers had one of the toughest “Big 3’s” to defend in LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Timberwolves got well-rounded performances from seemingly every starter, and they had a different leading scorer in four of their five playoff games.
Among the team’s best performances was star guard ’ 43-point, nine-rebound, six-assist outing in Game 4 that propelled Minnesota to a 3-1 series lead.

Edwards had 15 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in Wednesday’s series clincher, and he averaged 26.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game against the Lakers.
The 23-year-old former No. 1 overall pick was a key to the Timberwolves’ first-round success, and by taking out James and company, it earned him a new nickname from one of his biggest sponsors, Adidas.
The athletic apparel company posted a graphic of Edwards with the nickname “The King Slayer” along with a caption that read “believe that.”
The post garnered over 2.5 million views and had more than 800 comments.
And while some took issue with Adidas crowning Edwards given he’s only five years into his career while James is a 21-time All-Star with four championships, others praised Edwards for taking out one of the top players in NBA history.
“And everyone thought LeBron would get past Jordan and the Bulls. Edward gave them a taste of what would happen,” one fan wrote.
“He’s the closest thing to MJ and Kobe that we’ll see, just needs to win a ring or two,” another added.
“Never call LeBron the king…that guy loses for a livinh,” remarked another fan.
“@Nike what happened,” another user quipped.
