LeBron James, Luka Doncic Blame the Same Thing for Lakers’ Game 1 Blowout

The Minnesota Timberwolves have taken control of their first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers after Game 1.

The Wolves came out to play on Saturday night, and it resulted in a dominant 117-95 road win for Minnesota, which has now stolen away home-court advantage from L.A.

LeBron James, who finished with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks, spoke to reporters after the blowout loss. The 21-time All-Star admitted that the Lakers failed to execute their game plan after the first quarter.

“Obviously, we gotta do a better job controlling the controllables, and I don’t think we did a good enough job after the first quarter,” James said, via Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation. “They blitzed us in that second quarter, 38-20.”

L.A. got off to a strong start in this one, outscoring their opponents, 28-21, in the opening frame. It all went downhill from there.

Luka Doncic (37 points, eight rebounds, five treys) was singing the same tune in his post-game press conference. He blamed the same thing as James, with Doncic expressing his disappointment with the Lakers’ level of play after the opening 12 minutes.

“I think in the first quarter we played the way we played,” Doncic said. “We were playing physical, and then we just kind of let go of the rope. So, we have to play more physical. It’s 48 minutes, and every possession matters.”

James also commented on Minnesota’s hot shooting night, which saw them knock down a of 21 makes from beyond the arc.

“We know they have a lot of lasers,” said James. “They have a lot of guys that can shoot from the perimeter. So, we gotta do a better job of closing the bodies, getting out on shooters.”

Doncic echoed James’ thoughts as the former rued the Lakers’ lack of defensive effort in the game.

“They were hitting a lot of threes,” said Doncic. “We have to limit their threes, especially their lasers. We weren’t physical. They were running. They were getting anything they want and we have to be better.”

Despite his team’s lackluster performance, however, James’ confidence in the Lakers has not wavered. In fact, he is adamant that his team can and will learn a lot from this embarrassing loss, as they prepare for what could be a long series ahead.

“We’ll get back in the film room tomorrow, look at the things that we did well, some of the things that we didn’t do so well and continue to game plan for game two,” he continued. “We got a couple days to prep for that.”

Game 2 in L.A. will be on Tuesday.
