The Phoenix Suns may not want to trade Devin Booker, but dealing him may be the only path out of the trouble they find themselves in.

“It would make plenty of sense for the Suns to trade Durant, keep Booker and try to retool around the younger wing going forward,” Bailey writes.

“But few teams, really in the history of the NBA, have had as little flexibility as Phoenix has right now. The quickest and most logical shortcut to more is probably a Booker trade.

“He is, without question, the most valuable player on the roster. And if the Suns made him available, multiple teams would pony up offers that included young talent and picks.”

One surprise team that could acquire Booker this offseason is the Portland Trail Blazers, who may be looking to make the jump from the lottery back to the postseason.

“The Portland Trail Blazers, of course, can put together a mighty competitive offer,” Bailey writes.

“Anfernee Simons, 25, is a young-ish scorer and outside shooter who’s averaged over 20 points per game over the last three seasons. Shaedon Sharpe is only 21, one of the league’s premier athletes and broke out with 18.5 points per game this season. And while Matisse Thybulle is mostly here for salary-matching purposes, his perimeter defense could make him a target for other teams as we work our way into 2025-26.

“The most important part of this deal, though, even with what we’ve seen from Simons and Sharpe, is almost certainly the picks. Two swaps and two firsts, especially in connection with the players above, is a big price tag.

“That doesn’t mean it’s too much for Portland to surrender. Even after giving up this package, the Blazers would have a wing/forward trio of Booker, Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara that would likely have this team competing for a playoff spot as early as next season.

“Depending on the development of Scoot Henderson and Donovan Clingan, they might even be ready for more than that within the next couple years.”

The Blazers have some intriguing players and pieces to offer the, but Phoenix needs to be blown away by an offer to move Booker, and Portland’s potential package of Anfernee Simons, Matisse Thybulle, Shaedon Sharpe, a 2028 first-round pick swap, a 2029 first-round pick swap, a 2030 first-round pick and a 2031 first-round pick just doesn’t cut it.

Mavericks’ nightmare season ends with a whimper against Grizzlies

It’s not a surprise that the Dallas Mavericks missed the playoffs after a franchise-destroying season. The real surprise was them making it this far. After a season defined by injuries and a controversial blockbuster trade, the Mavericks were soundly beaten by the Memphis Grizzlies in the final Western Conference play-in game, 120-106, in a matchup that wasn’t even as close as the double-digit final margin suggested. If there was any consolation for the Mavericks, who missed the playoffs entirely one year after going to the NBA Finals, it was that Anthony Davis put up big stats. The big man scored 40 points and grabbed nine rebounds, though the Mavericks’ “defense wins championships” squad gave up 60 points in the paint. The supposed motivation for the Mavericks’ big trade, where they sent franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Davis, was to give themselves a strong defense. With Davis, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, they had a trio of defensive big men to dominate the paint. Friday, 6-foot-5 guard John Konchar had eight rebounds, the same as Gafford and Lively combined. The Doncic trade infuriated Mavericks fans, but it looked worse when Davis suffered an injury during his first game for the Mavs Feb. 8 — and didn’t play again until March 24. Then Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending ACL tear on March 4, during a season when Lively also suffered a fractured ankle, initially misdiagnosed by the team. GM Nico Harrison has been under fire for the Doncic trade and the Mavericks’ swan dive to end the season. Dallas was 26-23 at the time of the Doncic deal, and went 16-20 afterward. Now they move into an uncertain summer, with Irving likely to miss most of the next season and no salary flexibility, though they do have a lottery pick. With what a disaster the 2024-25 season turned out to be for the Mavericks, the only fitting end was a blowout loss. But Dallas can take solace in one fact: Thanks to their win in the 9-10 play-in game, they still aren’t as bad as the Sacramento Kings.

‘Who am I to argue?’ Martina Navratilova names greatest player in women’s tennis history

Former world No. 1 Martina Navratilova believes that she is the “greatest” player ever in the history of women’s tennis. The 68-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest to have played the game. She stayed world No. 1 in singles for 332 weeks. Navratilova won 167 titles in her career, which is the most by any player. She lifted 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam doubles titles and 10 Grand Slam titles in the mixed doubles category. Other than that, she also lifted the WTA Tour Finals 13 times in her illustrious career. Navratilova spoke to Tennis Channel 16 years ago but has been recently quoted in a report by The Tennis Gazette, where she called herself the greatest player in women’s tennis ahead of the likes of former world No. 1 Steffi Graf. Navratilova was of the opinion that at her best, she was capable of beating anyone. She also stated that it’s hard to compare players from different eras, as things have changed over the years. “Am I the greatest player that ever played the game?” she asked. “It would be hard to say no. I feel like at my best I was better than anybody else that I played against because my game was more complete, I prepared better than anybody, I knew what to do, and I had the ability to do it, I was as fast as anybody, as strong as anybody and I had more shots, and I was a better athlete than everybody. “Overall, the body of work speaks for itself, the records, a lot of them happened because I played for a long time, but the quality as well as the quantity, the combination. The Grand Slams, yes, Steffi Graf won more Grand Slams, but in my day, the Grand Slams were not as important. You know, Steffi Graf says I was the greatest to ever play the game, so who am I to argue, right?”

49ers insider shares big Brock Purdy contract update ahead of start of offseason workout…

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is still in the final year of his inexpensive rookie contract ahead of the start of the team’s offseason workout program, which officially opens this Tuesday. During a Thursday appearance on the KNBR “Murph and Markus” program, 49ers insider Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area indicated that Purdy isn’t close to putting pen to paper on an extension. “The latest is that the 49ers have made an offer,” Maiocco explained, as shared by David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. “It’s kind of sitting out there. Brock Purdy and his camp — and I don’t know how much involved Brock is. I’m sure the agent is shielding him from a lot of this stuff. But the offer the 49ers have made isn’t one that Brock Purdy’s side is inclined to take at this point, nor will they.” 49ers CEO Jed York suggested that Purdy deserves to be paid like “a top-10 quarterback” in the league. That said, it’s unknown exactly what type of extension Purdy is looking to land after signal-callers such as Geno Smith of the Las Vegas Raiders and Sam Darnold of the Seattle Seahawks inked what could be viewed as team-friendly deals. While the 49ers’ salary-cap-clearing activities from earlier in the offseason suggested that the club will eventually lock Purdy down via a lucrative extension, most of the football community has said the team should “play it out as long as possible without paying him” because it can secure his rights for 2026 through the franchise tag. Some within the league still view Purdy as a “game manager” who benefits from playing under head coach and advertised offensive guru Kyle Shanahan. “It doesn’t sound like anything’s close,” Maiocco added. “There will still be, I’m sure, a few more offers exchanged here in the coming weeks. Everybody seems to be confident that it’ll get done eventually, but it’s just kind of this back-and-forth. …I’m not sure that there’s a lot more that could happen on the quarterback market that would change how this deal would be structured or the average per year or the signing bonus money.” It remains to be seen if Purdy will stay away from voluntary workouts if he doesn’t receive an extension to his liking. San Francisco’s mandatory minicamp is scheduled to get underway on June 10.

What Tyler Glasnow Said About Being Shohei Ohtani’s Teammate on Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow is glad he no longer has to worry about facing his teammate Shohei Ohtani after the two players had encounters while playing in the American League. Glasnow joined The Athletic’s “Starkville” podcast, and one of the questions that came up was about what it’s like being teammates with the 30-year-old. The Dodgers hurler didn’t hesitate—he said it’s definitely better to be on Ohtani’s side than to have to face him. “I think it’s just nice to have him on our team,” Glasnow told hosts Jayson Stark and Doug Glanville. “I think that, playing against him for a lot of years, seeing how good he was, it makes it less stressful—obviously, not having to pitch against him.” Moreover, the 31-year-old noted that getting to know Ohtani on a personal level is a different experience, as he spotlighted traits that allow him to navigate superstardom. “Then I think just being around him as a human and a teammate is also really impressive,” Glasnow added. “I think, for the most part, if you gave anyone in the world that power and that talent, they would probably let their ego run away from them a little bit. “He’s just such a humble, great teammate, good dude. I think just the way he carries himself, how hard he works, and the work ethic and stuff is probably the most impressive.” Ohtani and Glasnow will soon share a spot in the Dodgers’ starting rotation as the Japanese star works his way to being the two-way player many miss. During an appearance on “Foul Territory,” Glasnow shared an update on Ohtani’s anticipated return: “…It looked good, effortless, good velo. Still just getting his footing about him.” These two teammates will get to know each other even more once Ohtani begins to feature regularly in the rotation and potentially discuss strategy for getting batters out.
