Luka Drops 39, But Lakers Secure Pacific Division and No. 3 Seed with Commanding Win Over Resting Rockets

In a night filled with playoff implications and standout performances, Luka Dončić lit up the scoreboard with a dazzling 39-point display. But it was the Los Angeles Lakers who emerged with the bigger prize — clinching the Pacific Division title and locking in the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs after a decisive win over the short-handed Houston Rockets.

The Lakers, riding a wave of momentum heading into the postseason, took full advantage of a Rockets team resting several key players. Houston, already eliminated from playoff contention, opted to prioritize development and health, leaving stars like Alperen Şengün and Fred VanVleet on the bench. The result was a mismatch in intensity and experience, and the Lakers pounced early.

Led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, who combined for 52 points, Los Angeles imposed their will on both ends of the floor. LeBron, still defying Father Time, orchestrated the offense with precision, while Davis dominated the paint with his trademark two-way brilliance. D’Angelo Russell added 17 points and 7 assists in one of his more composed performances of the season.

But despite the Lakers’ dominance, it was Luka Dončić who stole much of the spotlight with another masterclass. The Mavericks’ superstar was relentless, pouring in 39 points on an array of step-back threes, drives, and post moves. Even with the loss, Dončić sent a message: he’s coming for the postseason with fire in his eyes.

“We know what Luka is capable of — he’s a one-man show out there sometimes,” said LeBron after the game. “But tonight, we were focused. We knew what was at stake, and we handled business.”

The victory marked the Lakers’ first Pacific Division title since 2020 and solidified their position as a serious contender in a stacked West. With the No. 3 seed secured, they now await the results of the play-in tournament to determine their first-round opponent — but confidence is running high in L.A.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” said head coach Darvin Ham. “Our defense is tightening up, the chemistry is there, and the guys are locked in. We’re ready for whoever comes next.”

For the Rockets, the loss marks the end of a season full of growing pains and flashes of promise. Rookie sensations and young core pieces showed enough to give Houston hope for the future, even if the present is a bit murky.

As the postseason looms, the Lakers are firing on all cylinders — healthy, hungry, and determined to make a deep run. And if LeBron and AD continue to lead the charge, the road through the West may very well run through Los Angeles.

And as for Luka? His 39-point performance might’ve come in a loss, but it was a loud warning shot to the rest of the league: playoff Luka is on the horizon.
