Red Sox star having historically bad start to season

Devers now owns the MLB record for the most strikeouts in the first three games of any season.

    Red Sox star Rafael Devers

Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers (11) walks in the dugout in the first inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.

For the better part of his nine-year tenure with the Boston Red Sox, Rafael Devers has been one of the best hitters in all of baseball. But to start the 2025 MLB season, he has been anything but, joining an unfortunate category of players with his struggles at the plate through his first three games.

The Red Sox have gone 1-2 thus far in their first series of the season against the Texas Rangers. Not the end of the world, right?

Well, the play of Rafael Devers has been incredibly lackluster in the first three-game series of the year, going 0-13 at the plate with one walk and one RBI.

Even more troublesome has been the fact that Devers hasn’t even looked close to showing flashes of the player he has been throughout his career thus far.

Of Devers’ at-bats thus far this year, he has struck out ten times, which sets a new MLB record for the most strikeouts from any player in the first three games of a season in MLB history.

Obviously, three games out of a 162-game MLB season shouldn’t be the biggest concern just yet for Red Sox fans. But regardless, it’s not exactly the best sign from a player who has been a key factor in the Red Sox success on offense for years now.

Devers will have one more chance to turn this dreadful series against the Rangers around in the finale of the four-game set on Sunday. But if his struggles continue, don’t expect the noise around Devers to calm down anytime soon.
