Red Sox Top Prospect Delivers Strongly Worded Message to Management
Going into 2025, no group of prospects has more hype than the “Big Three” for the Boston Red Sox. This group consists of Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell.
Anthony, the number one prospect in baseball according to Baseball Prospectus, will start the season in Triple-A Worcester. Kristian Campbell, who was named Baseball America’s 2024 MILB Player of the Year, broke camp with Boston and is their starting second baseman.
Marcelo Mayer will join Roman Anthony in Worcester to start the season. Mayer, who was one of the best performers for the Red Sox in Spring Training, believes that he should have made the team.
Mayer was recently a guest on WEEI’s “Jones and Keefe” show. When asked about if he feels like he should be in the big leagues, he responded with “Based on performance, I feel like I did earn a spot on that team.”
His performance was outstanding during the spring; Mayer hit .333 with a home run and 11 RBIs during Grapefruit League action. Also, Mayer played in one exhibition game in Mexico where he hit two home runs along with five RBIs.
The biggest block for Mayer getting called up to Boston would be Trevor Story, who is in 4th season of his $160 million free agent contract he signed with the Red Sox in 2022.
While Story does have an opt-out after this year, his inability to stay healthy during the past few years does not look like he will entertain that.
If Mayer continues on his torrid pace, the Red Sox might be forced to move on from one of Mayer or Story.
