Red Sox Make Unexpected Trade on Opening Day

The Boston Red Sox made an unexpected minor-league trade moments before Thursday’s Opening Day showdown with the Texas Rangers.

Opening Day for the 2025 MLB season is finally here, and the Boston Red Sox will be opening the new campaign on the road against the Texas Rangers. It’s an exciting time for Red Sox fans, who are pumped to see the club’s offseason additions in meaningful action on Thursday after the club has missed the last three postseasons.

Even though the Red Sox finalized their initial roster earlier this week, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow had one more unexpected move mere moments before Opening Day.

Red Sox Trade RHP Noah Davis to Dodgers Before Opening Day

On Thursday afternoon, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported that the Red Sox have traded minor-league pitcher Noah Davis to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash consideration. According to BBWAA’s Patrick Lyons, Davis was immediately added to the Dodgers’ 40-man roster before being sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Davis’ tenure with the Red Sox was a short one, having only joined the team on a minor-league contract in December. The 27-year-old right-handed reliever previously spent the last three seasons bouncing between the Colorado Rockies and their minor-league affiliates after being an 11th-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2018.

It’ll be interesting to see if Davis can carve out a role for himself in the Dodgers’ bullpen. The 6-foot-2 reliever struggled in a relief role with the Rockies last season, pitching to a putrid 5.75 ERA with only 15 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings across nine appearances. He now owns a 0-4 record with a 7.71 ERA in 18 outings (6 starts, 51 1/3 innings) since the start of 2022.

Having said that, Davis did show signs of life during his Red Sox spring training run. Having pitched 9 1/3 innings in four relief appearances, the Newport Beach, CA native limited opposing batters to a .209 batting average while recording nine strikeouts and a save along the way.

The Red Sox will be hosting the Dodgers for a three-game series at Fenway Park at the end of July. Whether or not Davis is back in the Majors to face his former club remains to be seen, though.

In the meantime, the Red Sox will head into the Opening Day action tied for the eighth-best 2025 World Series odds (+2000) on DraftKings Sportsbook.
