Boston Red Sox make 3 roster cuts, reassign veteran (188 MLB games) to minors

    Austin Adams
The Red Sox made three spring training roster cuts Monday. They reassigned non-roster invitees Austin Adams, Isaiah Campbell and Noah Davis to minor league camp.

Fifty-two players, including 15 non-roster invitees, remain in big league camp.

The next round of significant cuts should be made Wednesday morning after Boston plays Tuesday against the Yankees in Tampa Bay.

Manager Alex Cora said the position player roster decisions should be set by the end of this week.

“By Friday we should have a better idea,” Cora said Monday at JetBlue Park.

The final two rotation spots — a competition that includes Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester, Sean Newcomb, Cooper Criswell and Michael Fulmer — likely will be decided when the Red Sox finish up spring training in Mexico next Monday and Tuesday.

Fitts has put himself in a great spot to win one of those spots. He has allowed just one run in 10 ⅔ innings this spring.

Newcomb (one run, 9 ⅔ inning) has had a strong spring training as well. He does not have the ability to opt out of his minor league contract before the start of the season. He and Fulmer are both non-roster invitees.

Criswell, who was sick the past couple of days, has a rare fourth minor league option. So he could begin the season in Triple-A Worcester’s rotation.

Cora has said it’s fair to say none of the Big Three — Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer — will make the Opening Day roster unless they win everyday starting jobs. Boston wants them to play every day wherever they begin the season.

The 33-year-old Adams struggled in Grapefruit League action, allowing six runs (five earned runs) in 4 ⅔ innings. Control was an issue for the righty as he walked seven batters.

Adams has appeared in 188 major league games, including posting a 3.92 ERA in 56 outings for the Oakland Athletics in 2024.

The 27-year-old Campbell made the 2024 Opening Day roster but he spent most of last season injured and/or in Worcester. Boston designated the righty for assignment Nov. 19, then non-tendered him. He re-signed with Boston on a minor league contract three days later and came into camp in much better shape (down 25-30 pounds). He allowed six runs, 10 hits and five walks while striking out three in 5 ⅓ innings in Grapefruit League action.

Davis, a 27-year-old righty, allowed five runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out nine in 9 ⅓ innings of Grapefruit League action.

He has appeared in 18 major league games, making six starts
