The New York Mets had a busy offseason. They loaded up on pitching and also managed to sign Juan Soto and keep Pete Alonso around.

The team looks like it’s in good shape heading into the 2025 season, save for a few injuries on the pitching side. Last year, they won 89 games, clinched a Wild Card spot and advanced all the way to the National League Championship Series.

However, not every member of the 2024 will be back in 2025. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez remains a free agent, and there isn’t a spot for him with the Mets any longer.

that the veteran slugger would end up signing with the Cincinnati Reds.

“Though the 37-year-old slumped in the latter stages of 2024 with the Mets, his metrics included a 94th-percentile barrel rate. It’s a decent indication that the J.D. Martinez of yore still walks the earth in some form,” Rymer wrote.

Martinez took a few steps back in 2024 after hitting 37 home runs in 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit .235/.320/.406 with a .725 OPS.

However, he still managed to hit 16 home runs and drive in 69 runs during the regular season. So, he should be able to bounce back with his new team, assuming he signs before Opening Day.

The 37-year-old is a six-time All-Star, a three-time Silver Slugger and a former World Series champion, having won a ring in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox.

The Reds could certainly use a bat, and he would boost their lineup. As for the Mets, there just isn’t a spot for him anymore in New York with Alonso back and Soto now in the fold, so it makes sense that he would ultimately move on from the Mets.

    We’ll see where he signs.
