Grimes drops career-high 44 points as Sixers snap 9-game losing streak vs. Warriors
Quentin Grimes was cooking all night, dropping a career-high 44 points and leading the Sixers to a win over Steph Curry and the Warriors.
The Quentin Grimes game? The Quentin Grimes game.
The Sixers snapped their nine-game losing streak by knocking off the Golden State Warriors 126-119 Saturday night.
That was in large part due to the career night from Grimes, who finished with 44 points on 18-of-24 from the field (though he was oddly 2-of-8 from the free throw line.)
Paul George had a quiet night but hit some big shots in the fourth quarter, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds. Tyrese Maxey was also quiet, he finished with just five points on 2-of-14 shooting but did finish with 11 assists.
Steph Curry led the Warriors with 29.
Here are some thoughts from the Center.
First Quarter
- Not the prettiest start to this one as both teams combined to start the game 7-of-22 from the field. The Sixers got themselves some transition opportunities with three early steals, but did not convert on any of them.
- Once they both settled in the pace of the game really sped up. Grimes led the charge early for the Sixers as he was able to get to his jumpers before the defense got set. Curry hit a pair of threes coming off of screens, then the Sixers completely lost him and let him walk into another that was wide open.
- It was another tough start for Maxey as he opened the game 0-of-5 from the floor. A goggled-up Yabusele was faring much better though after his one-game absence. He knocked down a three and got a couple trips to the free throw line to tie things up at 30 at the end of one.
Second Quarter
- Jeff Dowtin Jr. was back in the rotation as he knocked down a three upon checking into the game. The offense hit a lull as they tried to slow things down, but threes from Yabu and Lonnie Walker IV prompted a Warriors’ timeout.
- The Sixers eventually did find success driving to the basket as they comfortably won the minutes Curry sat. They were able to extend their lead as Curry came back thanks to Oubre heating up. He hit a couple of threes and got fouled attempting a third. He also had a nice drive that resulted in free throws, though he would have liked to finish the dunk as well.
- The Warriors were able to chip away a bit as they were able to do damage at the rim. Andre Drummond struggled to chase guys around as well as keep guys off the offensive glass, but he did put up 10 points on the other end to make up for it. Oubre continued to hit shots and Grimes beat the buzzer with a three to give them a 12-point lead at half.
Third Quarter
- Some sloppy defense from the Sixers as they left a couple more three-point shooters wide open. It didn’t matter much as Grimes had absolutely caught fire, ripping off 14 points to start the half. Even when one of this threes missed he was able to chase down the long rebound and finish with a layup.
- Golden State was able to put some points on the board during the Grimes heater, and they started to cut into the lead again once they weathered it. Three Sixers’ turnovers, a charge and two careless passes helped that cause as well.
- The Sixers’ small lineup in a zone was able to force misses, but they struggled a bit to grab the rebounds and close out possessions. All they had to do on offense though was keep feeding Grimes, whose only flaw was that he begun to struggle from the free throw line. The Sixers led by six after three.
Fourth Quarter
- Curry only sat for two minutes but the Sixers again made good use of that time, holding them scoreless to extend their lead a bit. George was just as quiet as Maxey, but he got going with a few jumpers during this stretch.
- The Warriors came storming right back though as they continued to snatch up offensive rebound after offensive rebound. The Sixers sped up this process with three more ugly turnovers — one of which occurred when George was trying to inbound out of a timeout and threw it directly to Gui Santos.
- Threes from Grimes and Yabu helped buoy the lead but the Warriors tied the game up again with two minutes remaining. Just as quickly as they had though, the pair of Grimes and Yabu took the lead back up to five with a drive to the hoop and a three, respectively.
- Some overzealous defense allowed for Santos to turn a layup into an and-1. On the subsequent possession Grimes was fouled on a three but struggled again, only converting one, keeping it a one-possession game. They kept the ball though after it went out of bounds and PG hit a jumper to push it back to five. The Warriors proceeded to turn it over, which just about wrapped things up.
- The Sixers remain at home for their next game, and it’s a big one for standings in the lottery. They’ll host the Portland Trail Blazers Monday night at 7 p.m. ET. The Blazers have jumped to the 10th worst record in the NBA, six and a half games better than Philadelphia.
