Dallas Cowboys Planning Major Shakeup to QB Room: Report
The Dallas Cowboys committed the next four years and $240 million to quarterback Dak Prescott, so it’s safe to assume the team’s immediate future at the position isn’t changing anytime soon.
But who the Cowboys want playing behind Prescott and potentially taking over for him once his contract ends after the 2028 season is another story.
In a recent interview with David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones stated the team is looking to shake things up at quarterback, which all but spells out the futures of 24-year-old backup Trey Lance and 31-year-old backup Cooper Rush.
“You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” . “I don’t know where that’s going to be. That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think.”
Both Lance and Rush, who combined for 2,110 yards 12 touchdowns and six interceptions on 349 pass attempts this season after Prescott went down with a season-ending injury, are set to be free agents next month, and it doesn’t appear likely either will be back in Dallas.
Rush has been considered one of the top backup QBs in the league for a few years, and according to Moore, Jones believe he will be too expensive to retain with several other teams likely to offer him more money than the Cowboys, who currently have just $2.47 million in available cap space, can afford.
It also seems Dallas is ready to admit the Lance project is a bust after acquiring him for a fourth-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Lance has thrown just 41 passes and 266 yards in our appearances for the Cowboys in two seasons.
“You know how much we think of Cooper,” Jones added. “We just don’t know what he’s going to cost. When we’re paying Dak what we’re paying him, unfortunately we do have to go cheap there.
“… We took a shot a Trey and wanted to do that. We think the world of Trey. But us having Dak signed up for the long-term, I think he’s probably going to be looking for something different.”
If the Cowboys do take a QB in the later rounds of April’s draft, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, Syracuse’s Kyle McCord, Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke, and Louisville’s Tyler Shough could all be possible targets.
