The trade deadline has come and gone, but the Los Angeles Lakers will be making some huge moves this summer.

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka will be aiming to construct a championship roster around Luka Dončić and LeBron James, and he might be in position to steal from the Dallas Mavericks yet again.

Things are off to a terrible start for the Mavs in the post-Luka era. Anthony Davis is already hurt and sidelined indefinitely. Mavericks security has been throwing passionate fans out of the stadium who are protesting the trade. Jason Kidd declined to meet with the media after Monday’s game — a bad look.

It’s not difficult to imagine a complete collapse for Dallas in the next few months. Things will get really ugly if injuries keep piling up and the Mavs either miss the playoffs or fail to advance past the first round. Now Daniel Gafford is hurt, too, and Dallas’ frontcourt has become completely decimated.

All in all, with Mavs superstar guard  staring at a player option this summer, he could easily jump off the sinking ship in Dallas and join a better situation, even if the Mavs come to him with a new contract offer, as they’ve indicated they are planning to do.

Kyrie has proven on multiple occasions throughout his career that he doesn’t have loyalty for any franchise, and that’s a wise decision on his part. The other thing about Kyrie is that he’s not afraid to change his mind about big decisions.

This is a guy who publicly announced he was planning to re-sign with the Boston Celtics, only to change his mind once that situation became unfavorable for him.

Kyrie is by all accounts a great guy, and he shouldn’t be villainized for making the best decision for his career. Will his next big decision push him away from Dallas?

That depends how bad things get for the Mavs. But if Kyrie does ultimately get the itch to leave, the Los Angeles Lakers would be an obvious destination.

Irving has already won a title with LeBron James, so that chemistry is amazing, and Kyrie has also expressed his admiration for Luka Dončić as a player and person. The two formed a close bond during their brief time together on the Mavs and reached an NBA Finals, by the way.

Kyrie has won with Bron, and he’s won with Luka. How about teaming up with both on the most famous basketball team in the world?

The Lakers would have to move guys like Rui Hachimura (and maybe even Austin Reaves!) to create enough space for Kyrie, but Pelinka can do anything, as he’s just shown.

Irving will turn 33 in March. That makes him right in between Luka and LeBron in terms of age. He could be the perfect final piece for a Big 3 in LA.
