As the world celebrated the new year, Jimmy Butler faced a huge blow with a seven-game suspension by his team Miami Heat.
Throughout the season, he missed significant game time and failed to secure a $113 million extension he had qualified for last summer. This combination of setbacks reflected mounting tension and uncertainty about his future, marking a turbulent period for the player.
“What do I want to see happen? I want to see me get my joy back from playing basketball, wherever that may be — we’ll find out here pretty soon,” Butler said of his team. “I want to get my joy back. I’m happy here, off the court, but I want to be back to somewhere dominant. I want to hoop and I want to help this team win. Right now, I’m not doing that,” he added.
A day after Butler expressed his concern about finding joy with the Miami Heat, the team suspended him for seven games. They also announced plans to entertain trade offers. Heat’s statement on the suspension of Butler instantly grabbed headlines. “We have suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games for multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks,” the Heat announced.
“Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team,” the statement continued adding, “Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded, therefore, we will listen to offers. It is worth noting that Heat’s President Pat Riley previously stated that the team will not trade the 35-year-old but his stance on the forward changed following Butler’s comment.
Did Butler care enough about it? It was highly unlikely as his continuous action even made it harder for both parties but he apparently remained on his stance.
Punishment 2: The Heat suspended Jimmy Butler again for two more games
Butler returned to the Miami Heat lineup after a seven-game suspension and has played in three consecutive games amid trade speculation. However, the 35-year-old forward faced another setback after reportedly missing a team flight. Butler’s rivalry with his team continued with even more intense back-and-forth moves from both parties.
Butler missed Miami’s flight to Milwaukee on Wednesday ahead of their Thursday matchup against the Bucks. Although he initially planned to rejoin the team that night, Butler is now serving a two-game suspension. According to Miami Herald reporter Anthony Chiang, was going to miss Thursday’s game against the Bucks and Saturday’s clash with the Nets.
The NBA world has expressed concern as the feud expanded but Butler is seemingly unshaken. In a previous report, it came to light that he had a meeting with the higher authority in the Heat but he was unshaken.
Jimmy Butler made another bold move, suspended again
No, it’s not over yet, Butler has been on a game and he has refused to lose it despite sinking a huge chunk of money down the drain for his action.
Fans and the NBA world will never forget the 2025, primarily for the Butler-Heat rivalry. The feud began at the beginning of January this year and the month has not ended yet but Butler claimed his third suspension, again, surprising everyone.
It was his third disciplinary action this month by the Miami Heat. This time, the team cited “intentionally withholding services” after Butler left Monday’s shootaround practice early, ahead of their game against the Orlando Magic. The suspension is indefinite and without pay, with the team confirming it will last a minimum of five games. “Miami HEAT statement on Jimmy Butler. The Miami HEAT are suspending Jimmy Butler without pay effective immediately for an indefinite period to last no fewer than five games,” the team shared on X.
“The suspension is due to a continued pattern of disregard of team rules, engaging in conduct detrimental to the team and intentionally withholding services. This includes walking out of practice earlier today,” the Heat added.
The NBA world is divided over the controversy with Charles Barkley criticizing the decision. “Jimmy’s just wasting money. I mean, he’s lost $3 million he’s never gonna see. That’s a lot of money, no matter how much money you got. $3 million is a lot. And he’s gonna get traded, but the Heat are not gonna take 50 cents on the dollar. And if you get in a contest with Pat Riley, you’re going to lose, plain and simple,” he commented.
Several analysts also questioned Butler’s professionalism. Regardless, Butler is on his own mission and that is to leave the Heat before the trade deadline on February 6. As for his teammates, Tyler Herro recently commented that it has become normal for the team. “It kind of feels normal now at this point,” Heat guard said. “Kind of is what it is, but nothing’s guaranteed. We’ve just got to be ready to roll with whatever cards we’re dealt tonight. We’ve just got to be ready to go,” he added.

Butler is pushing for a trade, but moving his $48.8 million salary this season has been a challenge for the Miami Heat. The new collective bargaining agreement introduces salary cap aprons, restricting high-spending teams’ trade flexibility. These limitations make finding a suitable deal for Butler more complicated.
