Five Red Sox Prospects Land In Keith Law’s Top 100 – With One Big Surprise
Keith Law’s annual ranking of the top 100 prospects typically veers from others in the industry — and this year’s version is no different.
Unlike from Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, Law’s rankings don’t include Los Angeles Dodgers rookie phenom Roki Sasaki, who tops both outlets’ lists. Instead, Law’s list features Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony in the No. 1 spot and four additional Boston products in the top 100.
Here are the five Red Sox prospects who cracked Law’s rankings:
No. 1: OF Roman Anthony
No. 9: 2B Kristian Campbell
No. 28: SS Marcelo Mayer
No. 42: SS Franklin Arias
No. 97: SS Yoeilin Cespedes
Cespedes is the most surprising inclusion, as he appeared neither on Baseball America’s nor MLB Pipeline’s list. In fact, hard-throwing pitcher Luis Perales, who’s rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, as the Red Sox prospect closest to top-100 ranking after Anthony, Campbell, Mayer and Arias.
Cespedes, 19, hit .319 with five homers in 25 Florida Complex League games last season before being promoted to Low-A Salem. However, a hamate bone fracture prevented him from playing for Salem and ended a potential breakout campaign.
Law ranked Campbell lower than Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, who listed him fourth and seventh, respectively. He’s similarly lower on Mayer, who’s listed 15th by Baseball America and 12th by MLB Pipeline.
On the other side, Law’s ranking of Arias as the No. 42 prospect represents a stark departure from Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, both of whom put the ascending infielder in the No. 76 spot.
