Red Sox Predicted To Sign Breakout Outfielder To Surprising $12 Million Deal

The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason with high hopes. Boston was reportedly looking to add quite a bit of talent to turn its roster into a postseason contender that could compete with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles atop the American League East.

Boston has added talent like Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, but it may be looking to add even more as the season draws closer.

Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted the Red Sox would continue to add this winter by signing Arizona Diamondbacks free agent Randal Grichuk. Finkelstein predicts Grichuk will sign a one-year contract with Boston for $12 million.

“Last year, Randal Grichuk signed a one-year, $2 million contract to be Joc Pederson’s platoon partner in Arizona for the Diamondbacks,” Finkelstein wrote. “Grichuk was expected to handle the short side of the platoon, with most of his at-bats coming against left-handed pitching. Grichuk thrived in the role, crushing lefties to the tune of a .319/.386/.528 slash line, with a 151 wRC+ across 184 plate appearances.

“While he saw righties sparingly, Grichuk even fared well in those at-bats as well, hitting six of his 12 home runs against right-handers, posting a 116 wRC+ across 95 plate appearances. On top of the offensive success, Grichuk was solid in both of the corner outfield spots as well.”

Grichuk was one of the best platoon options in the league last year. He would likely be very affordable for the Red Sox to acquire in free agency.

Boston would more than likely look at Grichuk as a designated hitter over anything, but he could still thrive in that role on this kind of affordable deal.
