One of the Boston Red Sox’ biggest needs right now is to upgrade their bullpen, and this proposed trade by WEEI’s Play Tessie would do just that. In it, they would acquire All-Star closer Mason Miller of the Oakland A’s. The trade would look like this:
Red Sox get: Mason Miller
A’s get: Wilyer Abreu, Kutter Crawford, Josh Winckowski
Last season, Miller was a breakout star. He finished the season with a 2.49 ERA, 109 strikeouts, and 28 saves. He also made his first All-Star appearance as a reliever.
This is a good trade for both sides. The Sox get a young star closer who could be the future of the Sox bullpen, for a great price. Miller has two years left on his contract, with the second year being an arbitration year. If the Sox are competent, they’d sign him to an extension ASAP.
As for the A’s, they get a Gold Glove and rising star in Abreu, a reliever replacement in Winckowski, and a proven starter in Crawford.
As it seems the A’s will try to compete next season, this trade offer might entice them. Hopefully it does, and both teams get what they want.
