Stephen A. Smith says the Suns should do everything to get Jimmy Butler: “The team is considered soft”
The have lost six out of their last seven games, including their last three. With the team now two games below the .500 mark, ESPN’s believes that it’s time for a significant change.
With Jimmy Butler admitting he wants out of Miami, Smith says the Suns should do everything in their power to acquire Butler from the Heat because he is the guy they need to turn around, not just their season but the franchise’s culture.
“If I’m the Phoenix Suns, now we know how talented they are. I’m not calling them this, please. Kevin Durant, I don’t feel like arguing with you brother. I really, really don’t. I’m just going by what the NBA people are saying…Y’all soft. The team is considered soft.”
Suns aren’t tough enough
Today, the Suns have one of the most talented Big 3s in the NBA, along with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and But great as they are offensively, NBA insiders perceive the Suns to be a ‘soft’ team that lacks mental and physical toughness. Smith believes Butler fixes that.
Many teams covet Jimmy Butler, but their main issue is matching Jimmy’s massive salary of $48 million. According to Smith, that wouldn’t be an issue for Phoenix because Beal has an equally massive $50.2 million paycheck. He also thinks a change of scenario would be beneficial for the former Washington Wizard.
“Give up Bradley Beal. Now he got a no-trade clause. Listen, Bradley Beal in South Beach? You know with his marksmanship, him and Herro and the crew, you can do some things in the Eastern Conference. You’ll never know. You ain’t trading him to purgatory. He should very much be open to a deal like that because he wouldn’t be a third option. He’d be a Top 2 option in Miami if Bradley Beal was there and healthy,” added Smith.
Jimmy changes that locker room immediately
Also, Beal has struggled playing in Phoenix. Not only have injuries frustrated him there, but he’s also having a hard time adjusting to being the third option after being the main man before he left D.C. That won’t be an issue with Jimmy.
“I’m Jimmy Butler who’s considered one of the selfless stars, doesn’t mind sharing the basketball, doesn’t mind not being the focal point offensively,” added SAS. “You in Phoenix with Devin Booker and KD, with Jimmy Butler in everybody’s face like what we gonna do? Come on now. If you’re the Phoenix Suns, you’ve got to do everything you can to get your hands on Jimmy Butler. You talk about changing the culture of that locker room, that is instantaneous impact.”
Smith makes a good argument for the Suns, and it looks very valid. However, it’s unclear if Beal is the guy Miami wants. Brad is only 31 years old, but playing for a team with a strong culture like the Heat could revive his career. But that’s just all of us. We know the decision is up to the Godfather.
