The New York Mets have had a successful offseason by adding Juan Soto and bringing back Sean Manaea. They could lose Pete Alonso after a report that the San Francisco Giants are interested in him.

According to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are interested in signing Alonso away from the Mets.

“The Giants remain in the market for a first baseman or DH, too, and Pete Alonso is on their radar,” wrote Slusser.

FanSided’s Scott Rogust urged the team to ramp up their pursuit of Alex Bregman with the chance of the Giants swiping the four-star All-Star away from them.

“The Mets did try covering their bases with the Alonso talks going nowhere. Tim Healey of Newsday reported that the Mets made a two-year offer to outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, who decided to stay with the Dodgers on a three-year, $66 million contract. The Mets’ offer featured the same annual salary as he received with the Dodgers, but no deferred money,” wrote Rogust. “With Hernandez off the board, Bregman is undoubtedly the best hitter available. He knows how to get the big hits in the big games, plus can play at two positions for the Mets — third base or second base.”

Bregman is projected to earn a four-year, $119 million deal in free agency. The Giants failed to land Corbin Burnes, but their involvement in the market shows they are willing to spend. They could realistically steal Alonso from the Mets. In that case, the Mets would be wise to sign Bregman to join Soto and Francisco Lindor in their lineup.

Bregman is a two-time All-Star, Silver Slugger, Gold Glover and two-time World Series champion.
