Yankees Linked To Blockbuster Trade For Projected $195 Million Astros Superstar
The Houston Astros are reportedly listening to trade offers for superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker, which opens up the outfielder market quite a bit. One of the teams being connected to Tucker, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, is the New York Yankees. The Yankees just lost Juan Soto and signed pitcher Max Fried this week. Tucker is projected to sign a $195 million deal when he hits free agency next offseason, per Spotrac.
“More and more, it is appearing as if the Astros are open to trading Kyle Tucker and the Yankees are among the teams most seriously pursuing the star outfielder, The Post has learned,” Sherman wrote. “What makes the Yankees fascinating is that an agreement with Max Fried gives them seven potential starters for next season. The thought is that would motivate them to trade Marcus Stroman to get out of as much of his $18 million owed next year as possible and/or Nestor Cortes, who will be entering his walk year. And that might happen.”
The addition of Fried opens the Yankees up a lot. They can now freely deal away Stroman, Cortes, or both without having to worry too much about depth. Getting off Stroman’s contract would free up the team to add much-needed help to the bullpen. But it would be a different starter New York would have to move to acquire Tucker.
“But because the top of the Yankee farm system is in a down cycle, they would have to get creative to acquire someone as talented as Tucker, and Houston is said to be very interested in AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil,” Sherman wrote. “It is possible that Gil and Ben Rice could front a package that at least gets the Yankees to the table.”
It’s almost a guarantee that a Tucker-to-the-Yankees trade would begin with Gil. There is no trade, no matter the prospect return, without the reigning AL Rookie of the Year heading to Houston.
After that, Ben Rice, Will Warren, Everson Pereira, and Brock Selvidge could all make some sense to move. But the Yankees are interested and they have the pieces to make a deal worth listening to.
