Corbin Burnes Will Sign with the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox had a disappointing 2024 campaign; finishing .500 and missing the playoffs. In an AL East division spearheaded by the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox need all they can get to try and return to October baseball. Because winning the division won’t be easy. Signing Corbin Burnes in free agency could help this team reach that point once more and see playoff baseball return to Boston.

The Red Sox just missed out on a playoff spot last season going 81-81 in 2024. There was a lot of good for the team. Jarren Duran emerged as an absolute star, Ceddanne Rafaela made his first steps to becoming a great big leaguer, and Rafael Devers still exists. This team on paper looks very good. And that extends to the pitching as well. For 2025, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, and Brayan Bello all return. They will also get Lucas Giolito back from his absence after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The team also extended a qualifying offer to Nick Pivetta and are awaiting his decision. However, the staff doesn’t have a true bonafide ace at the top of the rotation. Burnes could change that.

While Houck and Crawford remained in CY Young talks for a majority of the season, they still fanned out. Out of Pivetta, Houck, Crawford, and Bello, Houck was the most successful of the four in terms of ERA and WAR. Bello had the better record at 14-8 but also the worst ERA of the group. Bello is still young and has some room to grow but has shown his ability to be a great starter in the MLB. Their group was ok, but adding a true ace in someone like Burnes would make this team a legitimate contender.
