Justin Fields Named as Potential Replacement for $160 Million QB

The New York Giants’ 2024 season took another turn with the benching of quarterback Daniel Jones on Monday. Once viewed as the team’s cornerstone after signing a four-year, $160 million contract extension after the 2022 season, Jones has struggled with inconsistency and injuries.

With financial implications tied to his injury guarantee for 2025, the Giants are shifting focus to other quarterback options.

In the interim, the team has turned to third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito, hoping to ignite some momentum. However, the Giants’ long-term plans for the position remain uncertain.

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, Justin Fields, currently with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has emerged as a potential fit for New York.

“DeVito is the perfect QB2/QB3 for New York for years to come,” Fowler said. “But the Giants will inevitably need to double down with a draft pick and veteran help to address this massive need.”

Fields, acquired by the Steelers in a March trade with the Chicago Bears, has demonstrated growth this season. His dual-threat ability has been on display, with 1,106 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and five rushing touchdowns.

While he has since been benched for veteran Russell Wilson, Fields still sees a few plays per game thanks to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

“A few scouts floated to me that Fields could be a fit for Daboll, who knows how to use mobile quarterbacks and can scheme up defined throws for him,” Fowler added. “The knock on Fields — hesitancy in the pocket — has been the same knock on Jones, but Fields could at least serve as a bridge option while a draft pick develops.”

As the Giants look toward the future, Fields presents an intriguing option. With his impending free agency, New York could explore pairing his mobility and playmaking potential. Whether as a short-term solution or part of a larger rebuild, Fields could be a key figure in reshaping the Giants’ offense.
