The Los Angeles Dodgers struck gold when they signed Shohei Ohtani last offseason, watching him anchor the team through the regular season and ultimately a World Series title.

Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million contract is structured in such a way that pays him just $2 million annually, with the rest of the money deferred until after the initial length of the deal. It’s the richest contract in professional sports history.

While the Dodgers made a significant financial commitment to Ohtani, there was an expectation they would quickly begin to net returns through fan interest, sponsorship agreements and other business opportunities.

In a segment on “Foul Territory,” former big leaguer A. J. Pierzynski shared what he’s been told about the financial returns of Ohtani’s tenure with the Dodgers from just 2024 alone:

“They made $120 million dollars.”

Players around Major League Baseball understand the attention and excitement Ohtani brings, and also the attraction from the Japanese market, which has a deep passion for baseball.

The Dodgers opened their 2024 season with the Seoul Series against the San Diego Padres. Tickets were highly sought after and that figures to increase when the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs open the 2025 season in Japan with the Tokyo Series.

How can the Dodgers continue to build on Shohei Ohtani’s fandom?

One name on the horizon is Roki Sasaki. The Chiba Lotte Marines are slated to post the the 23-year-old before the 2025 season, and many believe the Dodgers have the inside track to sign the phenom.

Sasaki may want to join Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Los Angeles as they provide many stable factors of a plus-organization. But there is also some thought the right-hander wouldn’t want to be overshadowed by his fellow Japanese stars.

The Dodgers have a terrific past with players from the NPB and KBO, and Sasaki would further build on that pipeline.

Candelario signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Reds last offseason. He posted a .225/.279/.429 slash line last season with 20 home runs and 56 RBI. I did not expect there to be a market for Candelario this offseason. If there is, then Reds President Nick Krall should be on the phone with the A’s right now.

Edmonton Oilers Lose Forward Zach Hyman to Injury, Confirms Coach Knoblauch

The Edmonton Oilers have been fighting injuries to key players all season long, and now they may also lose forward Zach Hyman to an injury. Late in the second period, Hyman took a hard hit from a Senators player. Hyman didn’t return to the ice, and did not return for the third period. After the game, Coach Knoblauch confirmed that Hyman sustained an injury, and was deemed not well enough to play tonight. Knoblauch didn’t have much more information, so hopefully the Oilers learn more tomorrow. “No update on him. Obviously, he wasn’t good enough to return, and we’ll see how he’s doing tonight. But right now, no update.” – Coach Knoblauch It’s not encouraging that Hyman had time to be evaluated during the second intermission and was deemed unable to return. Hopefully, the Oilers get better news with more medical tests. While the broadcast didn’t catch a view of the hit tonight against Hyman, last night he was blown up by Habs defenceman Arber Xhekaj. He definitely could’ve been feeling something from that hit. Hyman is a major part of the team as the constant right winger alongside Connor McDavid. When the Oilers are rolling like they were last year, Hyman showed his scoring touch with an incredible 54 goals. Hyman may not ever reach that total again, but it’s clear that he has real goal-scoring talent. Unfortunately, Hyman hasn’t produced nearly at the rate of last season so far this year. In 20 games, Hyman only has 3 goals and 8 points – and that mostly playing with Connor McDavid. The Oilers are already missing Darnell Nurse with an injury, as well as Evander Kane through the entire season. Injuries haven’t been too severe so far this year, but they have been against core players. Hopefully the Oilers get positive news tomorrow with more medical testing from Hyman, and he’s able to return to the lineup as soon as possible.

After the NBA retired the jersey number of the late legendary Boston Celtics superstar Bill Russell in August 2022, there were also suggestions to do the same for Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant. However, Philadelphia 76ers icon Julius Erving thought it was too early to give “The Black Mamba” that honor. According to “Dr. J,” Russell was one of the most accomplished players in NBA history and was a champion on and off the basketball court. “I don’t think he should be compared with the Russell situation,” Erving said via TMZ. “We’re fresh into that but let’s see how that works out. Maybe at some point in time. Bill was 86 years old, so address it like that to an 86-year-old — multiple champions, multiple coaching champions, multiple on-and-off-the-court champion, or whatever — there’s no comparison. “I wouldn’t even try to compare Kobe Bryant to Russell.” Bill was also a champion off the court Russell was a five-time NBA MVP who won an unprecedented 11 NBA championships in 13 NBA seasons played. The Celtics legend also won two NCAA championships and was an Olympic gold medalist in basketball. Aside from his on-court accomplishments, Bill also championed civil rights and social justice. Because of that, Erving believes that the Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee is a much bigger icon than Bryant and should be commemorated on a larger scale. Meanwhile, “Dr. J” says it’s the Lakers who should celebrate Kobe. “It’s more of a franchise situation with the Lakers,” Julius added. “If they wanted to do it, which I think they already have, that makes sense — but for the whole league to do it, probably not.” “Dr. J” looked at Bean like his own kid Erving’s statement wasn’t meant as disrespect to Kobe but was a reverence for Russell. Although Julius wasn’t close to “The Black Mamba,” he treated him like his own because he was good buddies with Kobe’s dad, Jellybean, his Sixers teammate. “My friendship was with Kobe’s dad, Joe. We were teammates in Philadelphia when Kobe was born. I’ve always looked at Kobe the same way I looked at my children,” Erving told NBA.com. As far as the Lakers are concerned, they have done everything to honor Bryant’s legend. They retired Kobe’s #8 and #24 jerseys in 2017 straight after his NBA exit.
