Brian Kelly on LSU fans throwing trash vs. Alabama: ‘I wouldn’t be happy’
In the third quarter of Alabama football’s 42-13 the Tiger faithful were frustrated. After a face mask call that nullified a third down sack, the student section in Baton Rouge.
LSU did not receive another penalty for the debris. The Tiger Stadium PA announcer pleaded with the students to stop, and the act of rebellion quickly died down.
After the game, LSU head coach Brian Kelly was asked about the trash throwing.
“If I were our fans, I wouldn’t be happy,” Kelly said. “I’m not advocating that you throw anything on the field. I think it’s like any venue, I think you should use good judgment, but I wouldn’t be happy if I was watching us play. I wasn’t pleased with the way I coached or played either.”
Fans throwing debris onto their home fields has been something of a trend this college football season. The most notable example came during Texas’ win over Georgia in Austin, when the trash-throwing came just before officials overturned a controversial call, perhaps giving the impression that officials could be bullied.
On Saturday, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire got on a stadium microphone midgame to tell fans to stop throwing debris on the field in Lubbock during the Red Raiders’ loss to Colorado. Even earlier in the year, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox had to ask students to stop throwing cards used for a stadium stunt.
Trash on the field or not, LSU seemed ill-prepared to stop the Crimson Tide, and turned the ball over three times, dooming any chance it had of pulling off a home victory with huge College Football Playoff stakes.
“You’re living on borrowed time when you keep putting yourself in tough positions,” Kelly said. “And tonight, the dam broke. When we kept putting ourselves in those tough positions, the dam finally broke.”
