The New York Mets fell just shy of the World Series in 2024 and they could look to make big moves in free agency to get over the hump.

MLB insider Mike Rodriguez reported on November 7 that the Mets have made a long-term offer to Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames.

“According to my sources, the (Mets) have made an offer of over $160 million for a period of 7 years to Willy Adames,” Rodriguez wrote on X. “Their intention is for him to play third base; however, Adames is not convinced, as he prefers to continue in the shortstop position.”

The Mets do not need Adames at shortstop as they have Francisco Lindor. Adames has never played third base in the big leagues. A seven-year, $160 million deal for Adames would be the sixth largest deal in the big leagues for a third baseman. Rodriguez commented on his own post noting that signing Adames would mean Pete Alonso would not be on the Mets and Mark Vientos would man first base.

“If Adames go to the Mets, Alonso is gone and Vientos go First Base,” wrote Rodriguez.

Adames had a career year with the Brewers in 2024. He set career highs in home runs, stolen bases and RBIs. David Stearns was the general manager that brought Adames from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Milwaukee Brewers. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio told reporters that the Brewers will try to sign Adames, but other teams may outbid them.

“I think the free-agent contract is going to be very valuable for him and quite high,” Attanasio told reporters. “We’ll do what we can to stretch, but others have bigger pocketbooks and, we’ll see what happens.”
