Latest NFL Mock Draft has Giants dumping Daniel Jones for rising QB prospect

The 2024 season has only further enforced the idea that New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is not going to be the guy who gets this franchise deep into the postseason consistently. Despite comments from John Mara hinting at patience for the power structure, Jones received no such promises.

The Giants, despite having a very strong defense, aren’t going to be doing much of anything this season thanks to their lack of offensive consistency. If they choose not to reboot with a veteran free agent quarterback, look for New York to find their next franchise guy in the 2025 NFL Draft.

While there are top prospects like Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders that have risen up draft boards, it seems like a former top recruit might be the best option for New York at this stage.

The most recent NFL mock draft from Sports Illustrated has the Giants, who are picking No. 9 overall, taking Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. The Longhorns are ranked as the No. 1 team in the country, and no one has played a bigger role in that rise to the top than Ewers and his whip-like arm.

The biggest positive check in Ewers’ favor is the improvement he has made when compared to last year. Despite losing two high-end wide receivers in Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell in addition to tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, Ewers has been just as accurate while making more big-time throws as a passer.

Ewers may not be the best athlete as a quarterback, but his improved deep ball, strong arm, and daring style are all traits that franchise quarterbacks in the modern NFL must have. Steve Sarkisian’s offense, which worked to some degree in the pros, asks a lot from Ewers pre-snap, and he is often shown to excel in that area.

Ewers is a little skinny for a quarterback, as he will need to add some serious weight before he comes to the pros. His mechanics are all over the place, as some iffy footwork and throwing issues can lead to some serious inconsistency on shorter throws. Ewers may need to start the year on the bench.

Ewers is not a perfect fix; no young quarterback is. However, his ceiling is leaps and bounds ahead of what Jones can provide for this team right now, which should be the catalyst for a change that brings an end to the No. 8 era in New York.
