The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings face off Sunday afternoon for an early lead in the NFC North.

The Vikings (5-0) are the NFL’s biggest surprise. They’re one of two remaining undefeated teams, despite losing first-round pick J.J. McCarthy for the year in the preseason. Sam Darnold has led the offense to a strong start, rejuvenating his own career. But it’s really been Minnesota’s defense that has made the Vikings dangerous early. By most statistical analysis, they’ve been a top-five unit in the NFL, with defensive coordinator Brian Flores continuing his impressive career as one of the best defensive minds in football.

Flores will have his hands full this week, though. The Lions have put up 40 points in back-to-back weeks. They’re led by a deadly running game that is spearheaded by the duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Their efficiency on the ground has helped open up Detroit’s passing game, as well. Jared Goff has a litany of weapons, including big-play machine Jameson Williams, who is off to a fantastic start to his third season.

Detroit’s defense may be the bigger story this week, though. With last week’s devastating injury to Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions must figure out ways to continue to pressure opposing quarterbacks. It’ll be impossible to find a one-to-one replacement for Hutchinson, but that doesn’t mean Detroit will be hopeless in creating pressure.
