NFL Signing Idea Immediately Lands Chiefs $13 Million Wide Receiver

The Kansas City Chiefs watched as two AFC teams loaded up on wide receiver talent this week via trades. The Buffalo Bills added Amari Cooper. The New York Jets now have Davante Adams.

The Chiefs are expected to look at adding outside help at pass catcher after injuries to Marquise Brown (shoulder) and Rashee Rice (knee) will keep the Kansas City receivers sidelined for months.

Rice’s injury in Week 4 was a devastating blow to the Chiefs’ offense, as he is still the team’s leading receiver with 288 yards and two touchdowns.

There is one player available for the Chiefs to snag this season, and they wouldn’t have to give up a player or draft capital to do it. More importantly, they’d understand Andy Reid’s offense, something the head coach hinted on Monday that he felt would be important if Kansas City brought in a wide receiver.

“I think that helped JuJu (Smith-Schuster) and his situation coming back in and jumping in,” Reid said. “It helped Mecole (Hardman) coming back, but I’m not telling you other guys can’t come in and help out. I don’t think that’s an issue.

“It’s just going to take them a little bit longer to figure it out and get on the same page with Pat (Mahomes) and all those things that won’t be quite (like) what you’ve seen with these other guys that have been in it.”

The Cleveland Browns have a familiar face on their practice squad. Kadarius Toney, who won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs, could be an option for general manager Brett Veach to sign off the practice squad.

Veach might need to act soon to snag Toney. The Browns could sign the former New York Giants first-round pick to their 53-man roster this week after trading Cooper to the Bills.

Toney played in 20 games and started in five after the Chiefs traded for him during the 2022 season. The Florida Gators standout recorded 41 receptions for three touchdowns in Reid’s

Toney was with the Chiefs during the preseason. Reid called the 25-year-old athlete one of the most talented players they had on the team this spring but ultimately chose to cut him at the end of training camp.

The Chiefs and Toney had an interesting postseason in January and February. Toney was listed as inactive for playoff games, and he accused the team of lying about his injury status.

Regardless of the winter drama, Reid decided to keep Toney around and give him a chance to make a roster that had Rice (at a time the Chiefs believed Brown would return in the early part of the regular season.) With both receivers expected to be out for months, Kansas City could soon decide to poach Toney off the Browns.
