Chicago Bulls Reportedly Signing Joshua Primo

One day after waiving Marcus Domask, the Chicago Bulls made another roster move, though this one will be a little controversial.
According to The Athletic’s Darnell Mayberry, the Bulls have signed Joshua Primo to an Exhibit-10 contract. The former lottery pick continues to work his way back from an ankle injury suffered while with the Los Angeles Clippers. Reportedly, the plan is for Primo to continue his rehab in the G-League with the Windy City Bulls.
Bulls Make Controversial Signing
Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room.
Still only 20 years old, Primo entered the league after one season with Alabama. While he averaged only 8.1 points and 3.4 assists per game, Primo impressed on the team’s run to the Sweet Sixteen with his positional size, open floor quickness, and jump shot. The San Antonio Spurs drafted the six-foot-five guard with the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
He went on to appear in 50 games during his rookie campaign and was the youngest player in the league. Then, Primo was waived by the Spurs franchise in October of 2022. i went on to report that Primo allegedly exposed himself to multiple women while with the team. Primo’s camp shared that he would seek mental health help after his dismissal from the Spurs.
Fast-forward to 2023, and the NBA finalized its investigation, confirming the inappropriate behavior. The league suspended Primo for four games.
“The NBA announced today that Joshua Primo has been suspended four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the league,” the NBA released in a statement at the time. “The league conducted its own investigation and consulted with relevant experts. Following that process, the league found that Primo engaged in inappropriate and offensive behavior by exposing himself to women. Primo maintains that his conduct was not intentional, and the league did not find evidence that he engaged in any sexual or other misconduct apart from these brief exposures. Nevertheless, this behavior does not conform to league standards and warrants discipline.”
The Los Angeles Clippers signed Primo to a contract in September of 2023 but went on to waive him in April of 2024. Now, he will get another chance with the Chicago Bulls.
Primo may be the kind of high-upside young player who fits the same mold as the Bulls’ other training camp invites, but does that make it worth it? There was simply no reason the Bulls had to do this. Especially considering all the talk about establishing a new culture and identity, this is a tough signing to swallow.
