Astros magic number: Houston’s bats come alive against Angels
The Houston Astros’ bats came alive Saturday night at Minute Maid Park, as the team combined for 20 hits in a 10-4 drubbing of the Los Angeles Angels, inching Houston ever closer to another AL West title. Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners took care of business up in Arlington, beating the Texas Rangers for the fifth time in the last week to keep their postseason hopes alive.
The combination of outcomes on Saturday dropped the Astros’ magic number to just three, meaning any combination of three Houston wins or Seattle losses would seal the Astros’ seventh division crown over the last eight seasons. The earliest Houston could lock up the division and No. 3 seed is now Monday, and it just so happens that they’re set to square off with Seattle for a pivotal three-game set at MMP starting that very night.
Seven Astros had multi-hit games Saturday, including star right fielder Kyle Tucker, who went 4-for-4, and who’s gone 8-9 across the last two games, including home runs in back-to-back nights. Tucker, who was putting up MVP-caliber numbers early this season before a fractured shinned sidelined him for the better part of 2024, is getting hot at just the right moment.
So too is Yordan Alvarez, who hit a home run in the seventh inning—his 35th of the season—to cap a 4-for-5 night. Alex Bregman was the only Astros starter not to record a hit Saturday. Although one could chalk those numbers up to the Angels’ historically bad, potentially apocalytpic season after losing Shohei Ohtani to the crosstown Dodgers in free agency.
With just seven games left in 2024, the Angels could still tally their worst record in franchise history. They’ll face off against the Chicago White Sox, who have a chance at the worst record in modern MLB history, next week.
Houston has already won the season series against Los Angeles, but they’ll try to make it seven wins in a row against the Angels on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. with Spencer Arrighetti taking the mound for Houston against Griffin Canning.
Astros righty Hunter Brown is scheduled to get the ball on Monday night against Seattle.
