Dolphins to sign former Browns quarterback
CLEVELAND, Ohio — In need of a quarterback, the Miami Dolphins have decided to sign former Browns quarterback Tyler Huntley.
It’s been an interesting September for Huntley.
He’s gone from making the official 53-man roster for Cleveland, to being released shortly afterward, to his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, picking him back up for their practice squad.
Now the South Florida native will head back home, as Miami builds some depth at quarterback after the concussion sustained by first-stringer Tua Tagovailoa during a 31-10 loss to Buffalo last Thursday.
There’s no timetable for Tagovailoa’s return, per head coach Mike McDaniel, but Tagovailoa has since stated he has no plans to retire despite having suffered several concussions during his NFL career so far.
The only other quarterback on Miami’s roster is 2022 seventh-round draft pick Skylar Thompson.
Having spent four seasons as Lamar Jackson’s backup in Baltimore, Huntley holds a starting record of 3-6 with 221 completions for 1,957 yards and eight touchdowns.
He was also a Pro Bowl injury replacement back during the 2022 season, though it was controversial since he only played in four games.
Huntley signed with Cleveland after the 2023 season concluded and spent the entirety of training camp with the Browns. In three preseason games, Huntley completed 37 passes for 322 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions. His best performance was during the preseason finale loss to Seattle, where he played the whole second half and threw for 146 yards and three scores.
After making the official roster, Huntley was then released due to a lack of trade interest.
Now there’s a possibility Huntley returns to Cleveland with the Dolphins during their Dec. 29 matchup in Week 17.
