Cheltenham Town attacker Rob Street has said he was ‘offered’ a new contract by Crystal Palace over the summer.
Cheltenham Town swooped to sign him after he decided against staying at Selhurst Park. He penned a three-year deal with the League One side.
Street, 21, saw his previous Palace contract expire in late June. The Premier League outfit wanted to keep him but he rejected their offer of an extension.
He has opened up about his exit from the Eagles, as per a report by GloucestershireLive: “They offered me a new deal, but said I’d be loaned out again and at some point I needed to kick on with my own career. It was a tough decision because I’d been there since I was 15 and the club had been brilliant with me, with some many good relationships built with the people.
“I had interest from a lot of clubs and had offers on the table before pre-season even started, so it was looking positive. I wanted to go somewhere and settle down and have a full season of playing, building on Shrewsbury.”
Cheltenham saw off competition
Cheltenham saw off competition from elsewhere to land Street with him revealing that a ‘lot of clubs’ were keen on him prior to this season.
His decision to leave the securing of Crystal Palace and try his luck in the Football League was a bold one. However, he is now at a club where he is guaranteed regular first-team football which will be beneficial for his career.
Street rose up through the academy ranks with the Eagles and was a regular for them at various youth levels. He then turned professional in 2020.
He had loan spells away from South London at Torquay United, Newport County and Shrewsbury Town to gain experience. He spent last term with the latter and scored four goals in 38 games in all competitions.
The attacker has since played 14 matches for Cheltenham in this campaign and has found the net once.
It has been a tough start for the Robins and they find themselves bottom of the third tier. They are on their second manager already in the form of Darrell Clarke.
They lost 3-2 away at Blackpool last time out and are back in action this weekend against Port Vale away.
