Liverpool takes on Aston Villa in the Premier League, with three players set to be missing for Jürgen Klopp but Curtis Jones set to return after two games out.
Liverpool will look to sign off for the international break on a positive note when it hosts Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds have made a strong start to the new season, winning two and drawing one of their first three matches, but face a tricky test against a side that qualified for Europe last season.
Villa sits just one point behind Liverpool in the early table after following up a heavy opening-day defeat to Newcastle United with back-to-back victories.
And it will no doubt fancy its chances of finding joy against a weakened Reds backline, with Virgil van Dijk suspended and Ibrahima Konaté still injured.
Van Dijk is banned for this fixture after a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity against Newcastle last weekend, and there’s also a chance he’ll be sidelined for the trip to Wolves after the international break after he was charged with using ‘abusive and/or insulting’ words towards a match official.
Konaté, meanwhile, missed the trip to St James’ Park with a muscle injury, and Jürgen Klopp confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that this fixture would also come too soon (via Liverpool’s official website).
In midfield, there’s good news and bad news for the German, with Curtis Jones back available for selection but Thiago still not ready after suffering a setback (again via Liverpool’s official website). Jones missed the games against Bournemouth and Newcastle with a minor injury but has been training with his teammates this week and could feature.
Thiago hasn’t played since late April, having undergone hip surgery, and while it was initially hoped he’d make a full return this week, Liverpool’s recovery plan has hit a snag.
Deadline day signing Ryan Gravenberch, meanwhile, will have to watch from the stands, because he wasn’t registered in time to play. Expect his debut to come after the international break.
